From Static to Smart
In May, while camping with my family, I had a heart attack—a life-changing moment that gave me something I hadn’t had in years: time to think deeply about what matters most.
Technology wasn’t on that list initially. But neither was stepping away from it. I realised my entire life has been shaped by technology—not as a dystopian force, but as a source of curiosity, connection, and meaning. Technology isn’t the enemy. Misunderstanding it is.
That realisation became the beginning of a new chapter: helping families feel informed, confident, and ready to embrace technology together.

My Tech Journey
A 1980s Childhood — The Black & White ‘Analogue’ Years
Black-and-white television, Top of the Pops moving from mono to stereo, and the everyday magic of analogue technology shaped my early curiosity. I was fascinated by how things worked and always wanted to understand what was happening beneath the surface.
Late 1980s Teenage Years — The Stack System & LANs
Dad’s JVC stack, alive with graphic-equalizer lights, introduced me to the pleasure of connected systems. Later, 486 PCs and LAN gaming with my brother showed me how technology could create connection, competition, and room for creativity.
1990s–2000s Early Career — From Curiosity to Expertise
AOL, MSN, Sega, the Amiga 500, and Chuckie Egg carried that curiosity forward. Over time, exploration became expertise as I specialised in digital forensics and cybercrime, learning to investigate how technology is used, misused, and understood.
2010s–2020s Now — Smart Homes, Smarter Questions
Smart cameras, drones, AI, consoles, and audio technology now make the possibilities feel limitless. Yet the real challenge is human: people often fear technology because they fear not understanding it. That is why clarity and confidence matter.
The Wake-Up Call
The heart attack forced Richard to ask what he was contributing. The answer was to help families feel less confused and more confident by translating technology into plain English—without fearmongering and without pushing gadgets people do not need.

Parents are navigating their children’s digital lives every day: screen-time nuance, AI, boundaries, and the arguments that can follow. Understand Tech exists to make those conversations clearer, calmer, and more useful.

Surveillance and draconian rules create resentment. Conversation, context, and trust create the conditions for genuine safety.
Context Is Everything
Screen time is never one-size-fits-all: watching a BBC documentary is different from doom-scrolling TikTok at midnight.
Tech Is a Tool, Not a Villain
Technology is shaped by how we use it. Richard helps families understand it, question it, and use it wisely.

It started with static
My early career was rooted in typographic discipline and pixel-perfect publishing. I obsessed over margins, rhythm, and clarity within fixed viewports. That foundation proved essential: when you cannot rely on animation or fluid algorithms to rescue a layout, every typographic choice, hierarchy level, and focal point must earn its place.
Static craft taught me reverence for the reader’s focus. Yet as interfaces multiplied across contexts and devices, locked canvases began to feel like rigid cages rather than living environments.
Then the systems started talking back
The turning point occurred when software ceased being a digital replica of paper and became an interactive dialogue. Moving from static delivery to responsive architectures revealed that modern interfaces must listen, interpret intent, and reshape themselves around user goals.
I transitioned from designing isolated screens to engineering cohesive modular design systems. By embedding context-awareness and responsive logic into digital products, we craft experiences that remain resilient, coherent, and deeply respectful of human attention.
What I believe
Three enduring convictions govern every digital ecosystem, component library, and interaction I build.
Clarity over clutter
Every element must earn its right to exist. When extraneous ornamentation is stripped away, content, purpose, and deliberate hierarchy take center stage.
Systems should serve people
Complex systemic engineering is only justified when it results in effortless human experiences. Flexible infrastructure must adapt to users, never force users to adapt to it.
Make the next step obvious
Intuitive products eliminate cognitive hesitation. By choreographing clear pathways and visual signposts, users navigate with confidence and zero ambiguity.
From question to connection
A deliberate four-phase progression that translates ambiguity into structured, adaptive software.

Understand the underlying people, workflows, and core systemic problems before touching a single component.
02 Shape
Establish clear architectural foundations, content hierarchies, design tokens, and modular structural boundaries.

Craft and stress-test the responsive experience across real devices, dynamic states, and accessibility standards.
