The short answer
RCS can add richer conversations and eligible end-to-end encryption, but not every Android phone uses Google Messages and not every RCS conversation is encrypted. Family Link supports apps, time boundaries and device setup; it does not normally let parents read every private message. Keep spam protection on, review settings together and make help-seeking safe.

What is Google Messages?
Google Messages is an Android app for SMS, MMS and RCS. Availability varies by handset, manufacturer, network and region; some phones use another messaging app. Children may move between message types without realising it.

At a glance
RCS uses Wi-Fi or mobile data; SMS and MMS use carrier services; Family Link manages selected device and account settings rather than message contents; spam protection can flag suspicious senders.
RCS, SMS and MMS: what is the difference?
RCS is an internet-based messaging standard with richer media, typing indicators and read receipts. SMS sends plain text through a mobile network. MMS supports media through carrier infrastructure and may be subject to different network charges. A conversation can fall back between types.

Is RCS encrypted?
Eligible one-to-one RCS chats may use end-to-end encryption, but encryption is not universal. SMS, MMS, some groups and incompatible services may not have the same protection.
What encryption can help with
It can protect message contents in transit from some intermediaries.
What encryption cannot do
It cannot prevent screenshots, forwards, scams, grooming, device access or unsafe sharing. Never share passwords, verification codes, addresses, routines, bank details or intimate images.
Set up Android messaging with the right family foundation
Use a supervised child account, review app permissions, agree bedtime boundaries and explain why settings exist.
What Google Family Link can and cannot do
Family Link can support app approvals, screen-time limits and device setup. It does not normally read private SMS or RCS conversations.

Help children spot unexpected messages and scams
Teach children to pause, block and tell. Red flags include urgency, unexpected links, requests for codes, prizes that were not entered and pressure for secrecy.
Group messages: useful, fast-moving and sometimes overwhelming
Agree that children can mute chats, avoid forwarding private messages and ask before adding people. See Family Rules for Online Chat: What Works Across Apps and Games.
What children may share through normal texting
Before sending, ask whether the content could be forwarded, whether everyone consented and whether it reveals a school, home or routine.
AI features in messaging: a new reason to pause before sending
AI availability varies by device, region, age, account and version. Never alter or share another person’s image or voice without informed consent. [Editor: verify current AI availability.]
How to talk about messages without spying
Use calm, curious conversations about group chats, pressure, screenshots and strange messages. Make clear that asking for help will not automatically lead to confiscation.
When an Android message needs more support
Reassure the child, stop contact, preserve evidence safely, block and report. Contact CEOP for grooming or sexual exploitation, call 999 for immediate danger and contact Childline for confidential support.

Google Messages and RCS: parent FAQs
Is Google Messages completely safe for a child?
No app is completely safe. Google Messages safety for parents depends on eligible encryption, spam protection, sensible settings and open conversation.
Can Family Link read messages?
No. Family Link supports device and account supervision but does not normally provide private message contents.
Is RCS encrypted?
Eligible conversations may be end-to-end encrypted; SMS, MMS and some RCS conversations may not be.
How do I block messages on Android?
Use the conversation or Messages spam-and-blocked controls, checking the current Google Messages path first.
Modern texting still needs modern family rules
The goal is confident communication, not constant monitoring.
